The artist Mildred Howard was born in San Francisco in 1945 and raised in Berkeley, CA. She is known for her mixed media assemblages and sculptural installations that engage with memory, place, identity, and the African American experience. This notepad reproduces an artwork she made during her time studying fashion design at the College of Alameda. The original piece is the earliest known example of Howard’s use of found material, collage, self-portraiture, photography, and printmaking.
